I use Facebook as my primary social networking tool, including status updates. I know it’s a concept they stole from Twitter, but I like the way Facebook has done it better. But I also have friends who use Twitter, and for a long time I had a Twitter account but it languished in inactivity. So I decided I wanted it to receive my Facebook status updates. That’s easier said than done, I found.

There are many Facebook apps that will grab your Twitter status and mirror them over to Facebook, but not the other direction. There are also apps or sites that will update both simultaneously–from your PC or your phone–but that’s just not what I wanted either. For many people, this solutions may be fine, but I wanted to keep the long character limit Facebook allows and still be able to update from the Facebook app on my phone.

So here’s what I did…

You need to get an RSS feed for your status updates. That’ll be along the lines of http://www.facebook.com/feeds/status.php?id=????????&viewer=????????&key=??????????&format=rss20. (Note that I’ve blanked out my ID#, viewer#, and key; ID will be the same as viewer (mine’s 8-digit numeric) and key is a 10-character alphanumeric.)

You’ll need to find your own ID=, viewer=, and key= strings. Head to http://www.facebook.com/notifications.php. Then find the “Subscribe to Notifications” section on the right, and click the link to go to the RSS. The address bar should now show you all three strings that you’ll need to fill into the URL in Step 1. Copy/paste (or simply replace ‘notifications.php’ with ‘status.php’).

Now we need to use a third party site to read the RSS feed and update Twitter with it. Maybe there are several ways to do this, but I’m using Twitterfeed. There you’ll set up an account and add that RSS feed to it. There are several options worth checking out, like the polling time (check for updates every x minutes) and whether or not to include a bit.ly link back to the Facebook post.

Once you’ve provided Twitterfeed the necessary info (feed, options, twitter account info), and activated the feed, any new updates you make on Facebook should also find their way to Twitter (after a small delay).

Note: The caveat to this method is that you can update Facebook with much longer posts than Twitter, so when they’re carried over, they may be truncated. I’ve enabled the option that includes bit.ly links back to the Facebook post, so people who are actually my friend can read it in its entirety there.

<2009> Haven't you ever wanted a Michael Scott statue in the town square of your island?

We have a group going on Facebook for some of my friends declaring that we’ll move to an island and set up our own society. Each person is appointed to a humorous position befitting their personality. Anyway, a couple of us decided that our town center should contain a statue of Michael Scott dedicated to the phrase, “That’s what she said.” So until our island comes to fruition, I decided to whip up a Photoshop mock-up.

<2008> This is a refresh of my case mod that I call the DiamondBox and the components that go into it.

Background:
I have a watercooled computer in a custom diamond plate case. I call it The DiamondBox. I originally made it in 2004, and you can find the original writeup here. I wanted to provide an update to the project to show you all how it’s evolved in these past two or three years.

Inspirations:
The mentality of this project strays pretty far away from your typical Dell, where you have a pretty plain case that’s cooled by air. Watercooling is more efficient and allows me to cool the CPU better. This lets me crank the speed up to about 40% faster than stock while still maintaining stability. Basically, it saves me money. Sort of. In truth, I save money by not buying a more expensive processor, but I spend more money on the specialized equipment. But what the hell…it’s fun.

The concept of a diamond plate PC comes from the Waterbox incident of 2006 where my acrylic PC had an unfortunate encounter with gravity, and lost. I wanted a PC that was tough as hell and looked like it, but still looked cool and industrial. Aluminum diamond plate FTW!

So, a few days ago, I noticed that there was some cavitation at the outlet of the waterblock (an air pocket, essentially). Water was still getting through, but it seemed like the rate was a lot lower than it should have been. I had noticed some particulate in the loop in the month prior to that, too, so it was time for a coolant flush.

Here’s what I found when I opened up the waterblock. That gunk just isn’t good, and is the source of the restriction I was seeing.

Here’s the other side of the waterblock, where that black layer had chipped off and seems to be the source of the gunk. Apparently the waterblock is aluminum, and the underside here is plated in nickel, then zinc cobolt, and then the black dye is applied.

I’m not sure I trust this whole approach. Rule #1 of watercooling is Don’t Mix Metals, plus aluminum and zinc are toward the top of the scale, while copper is near the bottom. This means putting them together means it’s increasingly likely to have galvanic corrosion.

The knobs on the front go to a Sunbeam fanbus in the bottom 5.25″ bay. The knobs fit my design scheme well, and it was a good quality unit, so I added it. I desperately needed a fan controller since these 120x38mm fans are extremely loud at full speed. I typically turn the fan control up just enough that the fans start and that’s enough air at a low noise level.

Here’s the top with the radiator removed. The hole was cut to the exact size of the radiator opening, plus two holes for the barbs to pass through into the case. These proved to be difficult because I lose about 1/4″ of the barbs since the hose can only go as far as the top of the case. This made it a lot harder to get a solid connection.

A couple years ago, while I was leak testing, the hose actually came off of the barb, dousing all of my components in coolant. That was a huge mess to clean up, and trust me…it SUCKED.

Since then, I only use metal hose clamps on these connections, which poses another problem: there’s so little room in there that it’s very, very difficult to tighten the screws on the hose clamps. But such is life, particularly with this case. My tolerances are pretty tight in some places.

Another example of this is the radiator fan. I have to use a shorter-than-standard optical drive in the top bay in order to leave room for the radiator fan. The PSU, on the other side, also has to be under a certain size. The current PSU fits well, but the 520W I had before it was so close I literally had to remove the fan grill to make it fit.

Here’s the Eheim 1048 pump. The inlet is on the side, and outlet is on the top. Originally I had an Eheim 1250, but it was larger and didn’t leave me room to put any vibration dampening material. This meant it caused a vibration throughout the case, as well as some rattling. The 1048 is a lot better, still providing enough flow and hardly any vibration or noise. Unless you touch it, you’d never know it was running.

The small piece of padding the pump is sitting on is a chunk of what I suspect is silicone, from Petra’s Tech Shop. Supposedly it’s one of the best vibration dampening substances for this sort of application, and it does seem to do an excellent job.

A lot of people like the shape of this case window. Of course, so do I. This is one of the areas I’ve kind of dropped the ball, though–there’s still no window in this case. Just an opening for one. I have the Plexiglas cut, and I’m still considering setting it in place and then using black caulk around the edge to seal it in place. I’ve also considered bending some small aluminum tabs and riveting them in place, with some small round-head bolts holding it on the window side of things.

The Black Ice Xtreme Chrome Radiator. Normally I avoid anything with the word “Xtreme” in the name, but this one has turned out to be pretty good. I cleaned it this time around using distilled white vinegar (5% acetic acid) and letting it sit for a few hours, then flushing with distilled water. I wanted to be sure there wasn’t more gunk trapped in the radiator where I couldn’t see it.

Here’s the tubing as it’s installed. The white top of the fill-line, though ugly, will be hidden by the side of the case. I use metal hose clamps on the radiator and CPU block, and plastic clamps on the pump. I could use metal all the way around, but they aren’t necessary there, and I don’t have any more metal clamps.

Here’s how I fill the line. A funnel connected to the t-line, and typically jury rigged to stay upright. Then you add a couple ounces of coolant to fill up the T-line, turn on the pump for a second so it can circulate it, then cut the power and repeat. Eventually, there’s enough coolant to leave the pump on. You want to be sure not to run the pump dry, though; this can damage the impeller.

The small bottle of blue liquid behind the case is the antifreeze I use. Entirely because it’s blue. It’s just ethylene glycol, and I mix it with distilled water in a 5% ratio.

Night shot. It’s like porn for ?ber-geeks.

Another shot from the side. The light is coming from two blue cold cathodes hidden behind the side on the bottom and left side. You can see them, and the inverter, in some of the more brightly lit shots.

Here’s the pump in the dark.

The three pieces of tube connecting to the T-line were interesting–you can see they don’t use any clamps to stay in place. The T is tight enough that if you get the tubing on well, it doesn’t need clamps. In order to do that, I boiled a pot of water, stuck the end of the tube in it for a minute, then pressed it on hot. This allows it to expand and flex much more easily. Once it cools, that sucker is staying in place.

Here’s the whole thing with a bit of light in the room. Still looks awesome.

Future Plans:
The main thing I still want to do is finally mount the window in place.

Conclusion:
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about this project as much as I’ve enjoyed making it and showing it off. I’ve gotten some great comments about it, and it’s definitely a good feeling to know I made something unique.

A huge thanks to my Dad and my friend Tom Nichol for helping me out with this project originally.

What do you do when your workplace has over 80 empty computer boxes to dispose of? Okay, that’s not quite accurate. What do you do if you’re me? The correct answer, of course, is to build an elaborate structure using the boxes. In this case, it turned out to be a corridor of Gateway boxes in one of the 100-level rooms of Grawn Hall. Fun times.

<2007> This was just a quickie Photoshop, but I think the results are pretty entertaining. What if Gordon Freeman wrote a 'For Dummies' book?

This one was just kind of funny. There were no new skills learned, and it only took a few minutes. It’s a ‘For Dummies’ book as if it had been written by the venerable Gordon Freeman, of Half-Life fame. His Wikipedia entry gives the title of his supposed doctoral thesis as “Observation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement on Supraquantum Structures by Induction Through Nonlinear Transuranic Crystal of Extremely Long Wavelength (ELW) Pulse from Mode-Locked Source Array.” Simply put, “the teleportation of matter through extremely dense elements.” I thought this would be a delightfully ironic subject for a Dummies book.

<2006> This is a concept I had for a Phi Tau Rush shirt. People really seemed to like it, but we were unable to make it because it had too many colors. Maybe it will still get made someday.

I made the Super Phi Tau Bros t-shirt concept in 2006 as something the actives could use for a Rush shirt, or something else, if they wanted to. I based it off of the original Super Mario Bros game for the sake of being nostalgic. I used a t-shirt template I’d found for another project, and set up layers that would allow me to color it easily. Then I sourced some images from the internet. The main one was a stylized 1280×960 background image from here. After some work to find an appropriate font to match the original “Super Mario Bros.” I had to settle for one that was somewhat close. I replicated the background of the box the text was in to remove the original text, then inserted my own with the appropriate sizes, color, and shadow.

This served as the centerpiece for the front of the shirt. But because it would be boring to just put the image alone on the front, I used the shape tool in Photoshop to make a very Mario-esque star: golden, with shallower angles, very reminiscent of the stars in Mario 64.

For the back of the shirt, I found an online flash emulator for Mario and played through the first level several times, taking screenshots at places where Mario was doing something cool, and just basically gathering elements. I then took them and cleaned things up removing extra clouds or shrubs that were in the way, and splicing Mario in or out where needed. Then, using the bricks present all over the game, I made a custom Photoshop pattern and inserted our the letters for Phi, Kappa, and Tau on three separate screenshots. Then I could apply the pattern and have them look like they were made of brick.

This was done as three separate images because I couldn’t get source images of high enough quality to make it in one large one. Although I did experiment with this later, I didn’t like the effect as much as I thought I would anyway. I oriented the three pictures with a slight overlap, from top-left to bottom right to help show that they were linked. I added two triangular stripes to the back of the shirt to spice things up a bit.

Unfortunately, no one has been able to make this shirt simply because it contains too many colors. More colors means it’s more expensive, so it’s on indefinite hold for now. I did get a ton of positive feedback about it, though, so hopefully the Super Phi Tau Bros shirt will be realized some day.

<2006> This is one of my favorite Photoshops that I've done. It's a Phi Tau medal I made as a mock-up for real medals I wanted to have made. It turned out great, and makes a good desktop background, too.

This one turned out awesome! I needed to make a mock-up of some medals I wanted to have made, so I ended up going all-out. The resulting image was very cool looking, and extremely high-resolution. At the request of some of the other brothers, I made it into a desktop background as well.

I used two shapes (circles) to create the inner and outer rings for the medal. Inside the inner ring is a red gradient. I inserted the Phi Kappa Tau Coat of Arms, available on the Phi Tau web site, in the top center of the medal. I gave it a slight drop-shadow and bevel & emboss to give a sense of depth. On the left, bottom-center, and right, I put our letters. For the letters, and the outside edge, I applied a technique I found online that gave amazing gold letters. That technique really made the medal special.

I ordered a drape with the medals, too, and rendered that in Old Gold and Harvard Red, with a fabric-like texture. I’m extremely proud of this piece of artwork.

<2006> For this Photoshop, I incorporated a couple different screen captures to make a quick, funny image to "scare" Tom.

This is another quickie Photoshop, from 2006. I decided Tom’s apartment needed destroying, and since it was in the U.P., several hundred miles away, I needed a better way. So, after not-so-secretly getting his exact address, I fired up Google Earth and located his exact position.

I made a screen cap of this and imported it into Photoshop. I also got out a copy of the movie Austin Powers 2, and located the scene where Frau yells, “Fire the ‘LASER!’” and made a screen capture of that moment. I added the appropriate caption to Frau, and a recticle over Tom’s apartment. I bet he’s scared now.

<2006> This is a composite image of me posing with "Buddy Christ" from the movie Dogma. The intended purpose was to be used as a Facebook profile picture.

I wanted to create this picture for a while, to use as a Facebook profile picture. The idea was to insert a picture of me next to “Buddy Christ” from the movie Dogma. Unfortunately, although predictably, the only source image I could get for Buddy Christ was very low resolution and had a complicated background. The background wasn’t so much of an issue for what I ended up doing, though.

To insert myself, I set my camera on a timer to take a picture of me posing. I needed a solid colored background, because I would have to remove it in Photoshop. The wall above my bed was the best I could get. So, with the camera perched on the dresser, set on a timer, I proceeded to strike the pose. Repeatedly. You’d be surprised how hard that ‘pointing and thumbs up’ is to replicate accurately. When I finally got one that was right, I imported it into Photoshop, removed the background, and inserted myself. I had to shrink myself to what seemed like a proportional size, and then adjust the color levels to try to match the lighting better. It’s certainly not perfect, but being that it was such low resolution, I found it to be acceptable.
