Photoshop: Thomas Warnick

Posted by nitrogen on February 28th, 2007

Up to now, I’ve mostly done basic creation or editing. But the really hardcore stuff comes in when you take photographs and manipulate, splice, or combine them. So I decided to “transplant” my friend Tom’s head onto my other friend Nate’s body. (The title is simply Tom’s first name with Nate’s last name.)

Not surprisingly, this was quite difficult. To start, Tom’s head doesn’t fit on Nate’s body very well. And the angles were slightly different, which complicates things a bit more. Then there’s the fact that if I had made Tom’s head any smaller, parts of Nate’s head would have shown, and I would have had to try to erase them. Given the texture of the ceiling and uneven lighting, that wouldn’t be easy. Finally, the lighting on the two source images was different, so I applied a new light in Photoshop to try to minimize this. It’s certainly not perfect…but it is funny to make fun of.

Photoshop: The Grim Reaper

Posted by nitrogen on February 26th, 2007

Update: JPD 052 in the comments posted that the original image is by Kristoffer Frisk. He has a lot more art like this at his site, so I highly recommend checking it out.

This project was an exercise in modifying an existing image to add an element that fits in well. The Grim Reaper image is originally by a person who tagged it as RazorBack. While modifying this image, it was important to me to make my intended message, but not to take undue credit for RazorBack’s work. However, I ran into the problem that I needed to put text where s/he had put the RazorBack logo. I preserved it and moved it to the right side of the image to serve my needs. I also saved the address I obtained it from, but it is no longer a valid link.

First, I came up with the phrase–in fact, that may have come before I chose the picture, although I cannot quite remember. Second was integrating it into the picture, and choosing a font that suited it. I think the gothic-style font I selected was perfect. Third, I used some blending effects (outer glow and satin) to make it look like it was illuminated by the moon. I was extremely happy with the way it all blended together.

Photoshop: Signs

Posted by nitrogen on February 23rd, 2007

In 2003, in my BIS288 (Business Computer Graphics) class, we were assigned to create some signs. I don’t recall many restrictions on what we could make them on, so I made a sign for a Nuclear Power Plant, a Target Range, and a Red Light District. I developed a general sign shape as a template, and then could modify it individually for a sign from there. At this point, I seemed to have discovered the blending options and began experimenting to give the images a more 3D feel. This one utilizes a drop shadow and bevel & emboss.

Later on, I re-created a sign I’d made prior, to fit the theme. This sign is, as Politically Incorrect as it is, a “Cripple Crossing” sign. Its purpose was to poke fun at a friend my freshman year who was not disabled in any way, but enjoyed racing around the dorm hallways in a wheelchair. That was good enough for me.

Photoshop: Name Tag

Posted by nitrogen on February 21st, 2007

I created this name tag back in 2003, pretty much as a joke. I thought it would be funny to go into a convention, or an orientation or similar event wearing it. The reactions would be pretty priceless. I made it from scratch, all in Photoshop, and used a “Dripping Blood” Photoshop Action (downloaded online) for the text effect. I thought it turned out pretty cool.

Photoshop: Department of Defense Login Screen

Posted by nitrogen on February 20th, 2007

This Photoshop was done in 2003, as a bit of a friendly competition between Jeff and I. The idea was to take a source Department of Defense login screen and recreate it to be high enough quality to use as a desktop background. The source, as well as the product, were not intended to be usable login screens; rather they would be considered more along the lines of a movie-style mock-up. While Jeff’s remained closer to the original, I took a few more design liberties with mine, ultimately coming up with the image below.

New Pictures: MTU Winter Carnival

Posted by nitrogen on February 17th, 2007

Last weekend, Jeff and I went up to Michigan Tech in Houghton to visit Tom for Winter Carnival. Despite frigid temperatures and extremely long drives, we made it there and back in one piece (or, at least, the same amount of individual pieces as we departed with), and had a good bit of fun along the way. As always, the kids up at MTU love playing in their snow, and are pretty good at it. My favorite sculptures were Alpha Sigma Phi and the Audio Club’s 20,000 watt speaker system (even though I didn’t get to hear it). Another awesome one that I didn’t get to see was the Phi Kappa Tau sculpture, but after seeing pictures later, I can say that it was top notch.

On a separate note, I’ve been having some site issues with my hosting. I wasn’t able to upload the pictures for a day because my permission to write to my folder on the FTP was messed up. I e-mailed them, and it was fixed the next day, but they never e-mailed me to explain what had happened or tell me it was fixed. Then yesterday, the site went down completely. I was pretty peeved by this point, so I wrote a harsher e-mail reporting this problem. It was again fixed the next day, and I’ve yet to receive any explanation for the downtime. Maybe I should have gone with GoDaddy or DreamHost.
